We recently developed and multi-editor workflow system for RRC using Google Docs, which is set up from a central source, then shared to the appropriate editors, they have the ability to add images, charting and graphs, Google Docs is an online word processor that lets you create and format text documents and collaborate with other people in real time.
Google Docs has smart editing and styling tools to help you easily format text and paragraphs. Choose from hundreds of fonts, add links, images, and drawings. All for free. Access, create and edit your documents wherever you go — from your phone, tablet, or computer — even when there’s no connection.
All your changes are automatically saved as you type. You can even use revision history to see old versions of the same document, sorted by date and who made the change.
We then made this flow into Indesign, mapping headings, paragraph and character styles, to the appropriate styles within Indesign, this two-way flow allows for last-minute production, push text amendment back to Google Docs, giving RRC more flexibility and time to produce the finished document.
Google Docs takes precedent over content, Indesign takes precedent over style, so the documents are always protected. This workflow for InDesign, for the first time, combines the collaborative editing power of Google Docs with the layout power of InDesign, adding its own dynamic linking and sophisticated merge technologies to supercharge your editorial and production workflows.
Now creating some bespoke scripts to help design and arrange content, such as a text to image swap, which replaces codes with real images, plus auto table designing, makes for a rapid increase in speed of production!
